This brief is going to based around old and new techniques of photography and will require a lot of imagination to it to be different from the rest of the class. I was originally going to do a double exposure but i thought it would be to similar to other projects we have done so I decided to do a diptych.
I looked a lot more into Jennifer Loebers work, she did diptychs very close to home after her mother past away, they were photographs of her mum when she was younger and she also showed next to it a significant object that reminded her of her mum or was actually visible next to the photograph.
My Gran pasted away when I was very young but I knew that I owned stuff that was either important to her or she made. I also knew that I had a good selection of photographs that I could use that would be great to make a diptych with.
I also looked at many other photography styles and photographers that would work with what I was trying to achieve, that is all in my introduction.

Liverpool Trip
TateGyörgy Kepes makes photograms which are made without a camera, and instead in a darkroom by arranging and exposing objects on light sensitive paper. He uses organic and inorganic items like leaves, eyes and feathers. It shows abstract juxtaposition of seemingly natural and scientific worlds he works on unifying these two thing. This relates to our project with using and older way of making the photogram and with new industrial objects. In tate they were layer out really well and all of the images flowed nicely and linked together.
Open Eye Gallery
Metamorphosis of japan after the war, this photograph is of a Japanese man finishing his management course in 1961. This exhibition shows the period of time after the war showing the democracy and transformation that lead Japan to becoming a great power, this links to our theme of old and new. The exhibition was laid out in three sections "The Aftermath of the War", "Between Tradition and Modernity" and "Towards a New Japan".

Walker Art Gallery

Experimental Shoots
I like these photographs in black and white it makes them look dark and mysterious, it also gives them quite an old feel to it with old photographs originally being in black and white.
I like these photographs because they are really colourful and that makes them quite interesting and they stand out, you can also see the old trees and the buildings have coloration on them that make them look quite old as well.

These are some of my black and white photographs that I have edited in photoshop to look negative, I'm not a big fan of this effect but I understand why people might like them, this makes them look really mysterious and like they haven't been processed properly in a dark room which makes them look quite old.
Evaluation
In this photograph it shows a women looking at her artwork on the floor and a few other people passing by looking at it also. I think this shows that people can do a lot but they need to go to the streets to get money and have other people appreciate there work.
I believe it could have been composed differently with the bag in the corner being there it almost takes away from the overall photograph, the exposure is good and not too dark or too bright.
I think I conveyed a message quite well although I think I could have got a good image of her drawing and doing some of the drawing and show her love for doing this street work. This also shows old a new in a way because is's in a new looking city with a young women but drawing representation of an old painting.

Installation Art
Installation art is three dimensional and is designed to transform the perception of the space. This means you could use 3D objects and end up making it look 2D.

I really like these kind of images because they're really different and there are a lot of different ways for you to be able to do it. You can do installations with a lot of different representations with a lot of different materials and they can be completely original.

He was originally a commercial photographer before he started doing some original landscape work. He made some buildings and landscapes like factories and other buildings that affect the environment, although he made them out of recycled materials.

Photographic Tehcniques
I went out to find things I could take photographs of that represent old and new, I tried to get the look of the old with the trees and nature and the look of the black and white. I then looked for the new with the buildings and people, I really like the look of these image in black and white. My favorite one is on the third row two from the left, I like how I've framed it and the composure with the lighting. We also went to the amphitheater which has a really old 'Roman' look to it, to get the black and white effect I changed the settings on my camera. The first 5 images are a bit too dark so i changed my exposure and then i liked what they looked like.
Negative
To get this affect I used photoshop, I first inverted it and then I made it black and white.
Old Crumpled Photo
To achieve this I had to have a photograph and a photo of some crumpled paper. I made changed the hue saturation of the paper and the opacity of it making it transparent so you can see the original photo through it and it gave quite a nice old looking affect.
Precision Colouring
To achieve this I had to highlight half of the photograph being quite precise and then change the hue saturation of the highlighted are to get a different colour to the rest on the photograph. I quite like this although I needed to unhighlight her arm to make it look better.
Writing with and Image
To do this I had my original photograph and a layer that was plain white and was on top of the photograph. I then added text to the white layer and made it bold and then made it completely transparent to make the photograph behind it visible.
Vignette
For this look I had to use the marque tool in the shape of an oval, and dragged that from one corner to the other and then changed the brightness of the corners that weren't highlighted this made the corners darker to the rest of the photograph.
Cyanotype
To create this you have to go to adjustments select hue saturation and then select cyanotype and then you can change the opacity to how you like it.
Black and White Film Grain
To get this affect you need to make sure your photograph is black and white, you need to make a new clean layer and then go to edit and select fill, that pulls up this box on the left. Making sure the contents is on 50% black and white then click ok. This won't have done much.

Then go to filter and then noise and choose add noise this that ill pull up the box on the left. Make sure you have the monochromatic boxed checked at the bottom. You can then change the amount of grain as much as you want then click okay, you can then also change the opacity of the grain to how you like it.

Hand Painting Black and White
Once you have your black and white photograph on photoshop you need to then add a blank layer and change the blend mode to 'colour' you can then chose whatever colour you want and click on the brush tool and start painting. If at any point you want a different colour you need a new layout, that way you are able to rub out any mistakes but not ruin the rest.
